The co-op grocery reopened Thursday morning, fourteen weeks after the spring flood put a metre of creek water through its main floor, and the first customer through the door was, by unanimous staff decision, the member who organized the mud-out.
The flood gutted the flooring, the lower shelving, and the walk-in coolers. The rebuild was insured; the survival was not. What carried the store through a quarter with no revenue was the membership structure itself — three hundred households pre-paying their next year's member fee in the week after the water dropped.
The reopened floor plan quietly banks the lesson: coolers on plinths, electrical raised to counter height, and the bulk bins — the flood's messiest casualty — relocated upstairs.
